During those freezing nights before New Year's, the stars shone like something out of a fairy tale—big, bright sparks against the black sky. My conversation with Crocodile Tears was brief, and it left a bitter taste, but the news still knocked the wind out of me. I went out onto the balcony, maybe to have a cry over my failed love or maybe just to get some fresh air, but when I flung open the window, I froze, stunned by the quiet beauty of the night sky.

Have you ever seen a shooting star? Me neither. But there I was, staring, unable to believe my eyes. It had been hanging there just a second ago… and then—bam! A little star went streaking across the sky! It broke loose and shot toward the horizon on a slant—bold and bright as a little flame!

I actually opened my mouth in surprise. I leaned out the window and gawked. Then, slow on the uptake as ever, it hit me like a smack to the back of the head. Make a wish, Bun! You'll miss your chance at happiness!

So I made one. Why not? To fall in love so hard I'd see stars just like that in my eyes! Then I came to my senses. Wait, what does that mean? I'll fall in love—but who'll fall for me?

Nope. I won't settle for that. I want to be loved, too! I want our love to be bright, strong, and real! Crazy! And no crocodiles lurking beneath the surface!

And also… a house and kids right away. And a man with a backbone, but kind and reasonably good-looking. Although—actually, better make him really good-looking! That's what I want, period—it's my star, after all! I mean, why not? If you're going to dream, dream of a prince! If you're going to scoop up happiness, use a bucket! It's not like I'm asking for money, so why be stingy?

The little star flashed… and vanished. I sighed. What a fool you are, Natashka.

You're twenty-five, and you still believe in fairy tales like you did as a child.
