Still, Carter unsettled me whenever I saw him. I never did manage to get used to him.
Time passed, but just as on that first day, it still felt strange to see Alex's mirror image in another person. Especially when the two brothers came out of the house in the mornings and got on the school bus with their sister. In that brief time when they walked together or stood side by side, when they smiled at each other and traded jokes, the darkness vanished from Carter's gaze... When he raised a hand and brushed the bangs from his face, he and Alex looked so much alike.
Perhaps if their characters had been just as alike, everything would have fallen into place.
